These guys are the masters of smooth jazz and truly emphasize the super in super group. If youre like me and you enjoy jazz but cant take too much of a single instrument, Fourplay is the answer. ![]() And if youre also like me in that you prefer instrumental jazz to vocals getting in the way, this CD is great for that as well. This CD is not 100 instrumental but the little bit of vocals you hear are subtle and quite complementary. It can relax you after a stressful day, energize you for a morning of chores, get you humming in the car, help you fall asleep at night, and of course put you in the mood (I mean the title IS Between the Sheets). Originally formed to showcase the talents of keyboards-meister Bob James and guitarissimo Lee Ritenour, this album also saw the other two other guys -- Harvey Mason and Nathan East -- coming forward as great songwriters. As per the debut, this is excellently recorded and better than any of the solo albums by Ritenour or James that I know. The quartet of Bob James, Lee Ritenour, Nathan East, and Harvey Mason makes music that could relax and stimulate the most stoic of individuals. Every song is highly effective with the title cut being a true standout. I love the balance between control and spontaneity of expression - cp Bach. A power cut forced the guys into doing an unplugged concert at the start Thankfully power was resumed and these incredible musicians could be heard in all there glory. There first three albums all feature Lee Ritenour and remain my favourite. Funky, cool, sophisticated and beautifully recorded.I like this sort of music as it sits well with my desire for things being in their place whilst retaining great musicality. If you want raw edges this CD isnt for you though. ![]() I didnt realise that this earlier version of the group didnt feature Larry Carlton on guitar but Lee Ritenour. Well they are both fantastic players but it was a surprise as I only knew them from a later offering entitled Heartfelt. I dont think that this will be a recording that I will treasure as I think that there are many better offerings in this genre but it IS good.
